We should all agree that snakes are important. They help keep those annoying rodent species at bay, prevent the spread of diseases and protect our crops. However, we don’t all necessarily want them in our gardens. Snake repellents are really just “snake oil” or fake products that don’t really work. The best methods for keeping snakes out of the garden are keeping it clutter-free and planting snake-repellent plants
What plants do snakes hate?
Mothballs and other purchased snake repellents are not effective. The only way to keep snakes away from your home is to keep tempting habitats like rocks, wood piles, and debris away from your home. As an additional precaution, you can install anti-snake plants. There is some controversy that even these don’t work, but they can be rewarding in other ways and it doesn’t hurt to try.
Snakes accumulate molecules on their tongues that then pass through the Jacobson’s organ. This is essentially what they smell like. They don’t have noses and their idea of a smell is a little different than ours. That said, they have an extraordinary sense of smell that can be affected by certain plants.
Strong aromas are said to be plants that repel snakes. Think allium , herbs , etc. Garlic Society is an ideal example. Another great plant is lemongrass , which releases citronella oil and has a strong lemon fragrance. Most of these smelly plants are also pretty and useful, and could make good snake repellent plants.
Other anti-snake plants
Keeping your garden natural and avoiding chemicals is a sensible way to take care of our planet. Using snake-repelling plants instead of any formulation can keep the garden organic. Thorny and prickly plants may also have some repellent properties.
Mother-in-law’s tongue , yucca , and other similar spiky plants could be effective in keeping snakes out of the garden. Marigolds are used to repel a large number of plants and could deter snakes. Mugwort , although considered a weed, provides a season of bloom combined with strongly scented leaves that snakes apparently do not like
More tips for repelling snakes
Keeping your yard free of debris is the number one tip for keeping snakes away. Also, keep the grass mowed so snakes don’t have cover or a place to hide. Seal around the house and under covers, great for hiding places from snakes.
Most importantly, do not allow animals that are “snake food” to roost in your garden. Prevent mice and rats by using bait stations. Do not leave foods out that may attract these pests.
Snakes are good for the garden and the environment and should not be harmed, but a few small tricks can prevent them from surprising you in the landscape.
